Shy Children, Phobic Adults: Nature and treatment of social anxiety disorder
By: Deborah C. Beidel ; Samuel M. Turner
|
This book describes the clinical presentation of social anxiety disorder, presents theoretical perspectives on its etiology, and examines the latest empirical data with respect to both pharmacological and behavioral interventions. Social anxiety disorder occurs in children, adolescents, and adults, but its manifestation and treatment differ depending on developmental factors. Drawing from a broad literature base as well as their extensive clinical experience, the authors illustrate the impact of developmental stage on all aspects of the disorder. They also provide practical implementation guidelines, enhanced by case examples, tips on patient management, lists of assessment instruments, and sample forms to use with clients.
In Creating High-Tech Teams: Practical Guidance on Work Performance and Technology, leaders in science and industry explore the state-of-the-art in technology and teamwork and how to translate this information into the best possible guidance for industrial–organizational practitioners. Contributors who work with specific types of technology, such as groupware and data visualization, describe their understanding of how that technology affects teamwork and how to use it. Contributors provide the reader with a review of the most prevalent tools used today and how to apply them in a number of industries. The final section of the volume provides a glimpse into the future by discussing various applications of "virtual" teammates, where part of the team is the technology. The problems that arise with technology and teamwork—and sometimes even their solutions—often never make it into the pages of scientific journals. Thus much of the information collected in this volume is appearing for the first time anywhere. This, combined with the accessibility of the writing and the fascinating range of fields and technology covered, makes Creating High-Tech Teams an invaluable resource for industrial–organizational psychologists and others working to make teams more effective through technology. This volume brings together top scholars in industrial and organizational psychology with social psychologists to explore the research and theory relating to workplace discrimination. This book presents a review of the research on discrimination based on race, age, sexual orientation, gender, physical appearance, disability, and personality. In addition, it explores the potential bases for a general model of discrimination in the workplace.
What is the impact of stress on soldier performance on the modern, electronic battlefield? This book brings together leading researchers from diverse perspectives to shed light on this critical question. Using a variety of methodological and conceptual approaches, the insights generated represent a benchmark in the present state of understanding and provide a range of directions for future research in this arena.
Although this work focuses on soldier stress and soldier performance, the principles that are derived extend well beyond this single application. Their findings can be applied to people facing the demands of the business world or research as much as to those who meet life or death situations, such as homeland security, first responders, and law enforcement personnel.
Key Points
- Combines contributions from both traditional academics and military researchers.
- Directly applicable to defense environment and to stressful situations elsewhere.
The general purpose of this book is to help therapists and therapists-in-training provide effective and sensitive counseling services to client populations with needs or concerns dissimilar to those of mainstream, middle-class clients. This book does not assume that therapists are White and clients are "minorities". Rather, this book adopts the perspective that therapists and clients are simply dissimilar on one or more important human variables. Unique to this book is the inclusion of populations such as bi-ethnic/bi-racial individuals, gays and lesbians, the elderly, religious minorities, Anglos from lower social classes, and Arab Americans. This book is also written from a relatively more neutral position or point of view rather than overemphasizing ethnic minorities' status as "victims" of racism. This characteristic elevates the status of minorities to that of the dominant group and makes the book more relevant to all students and clients.
During the past decade, cognitive science has substantially influenced the study of team performance and has helped develop the field of team cognition. The contributors to this volume describe the many ways in which team cognition is being used as an organizing framework to guide research into factors that affect team coordination.
