Paul Brian Kline, Ph.D.
Title: User Interface Modeler/Team Lead
Year started in the program: 1991
Year graduated: 1999
Research interest: My interests involve applying most aspects
of human-centered design (requirements elicitation, task/role
analysis, rapid prototyping, participatory design, usability
testing) to the creation of human-computer interfaces. I'm
currently working on a large pharmacy system that serves a
diverse set of users - via a range of UI technologies (Pharmacists/technicians
- traditional client server; prescribers - web/PDA/WAP; customers
- web/PDA/WAP; external partners - web).
Current employer: The Technical Resource Connection Inc. (a
consulting subsidiary of Perot Systems). www.trcinc.com
Significant past employers: IBM, SPSS
Professional Summary:
Expertise in all phases of User Interface (UI) and user interaction planning,
analysis, design, evaluation, and testing.
Specific areas of experience include project/team management,
pre-design analysis, user profiling, requirements gathering
and feature specification, prototyping, iterative design, and
testing of new UIs. Also, performing heuristic evaluations,
cognitive walkthroughs and usability testing of existing UIs.
Finally, experience providing usability education to developers,
working with development teams to standardize UIs, development
of UI style guides, and designing and conducting high quality
experimental research.
Experience applying user-centered and iterative design methodologies
to a variety of products with real-world development schedules.
Examples include pharmacy fulfillment applications, analysis
tools, DBMS, modeling tools, on-line help systems, computer-based
instruction, web sites and web-based applications.
Solid working knowledge of official and defacto standards
for the design of object oriented and application oriented
user interfaces including IBM's Common User Access and MS Windows
application design guidelines. Additional training in visual
literacy including the rhetoric of graphics, representation
of concepts and relationships, and effective use of color and
animation.
Experienced or familiar with the following architectures and
technologies; stand-alone, client-server, agent-based applications,
MFC, Java/SWING, web/JSP based applications, web-clipping/PDA,
WAP, XML, virtual environments.
