Research interest: My research interests fall under the general
area of "knowledge acquisition of complex systems." This
includes such factors as knowledge structure development (e.g.,
mental models), use of metacognitive strategies in learning,
active learning approaches to training, and the role of individual
differences. Also of interest are the factors involved in training
and performance of teams in distributed environments.
I am presently working on my dissertation, which seeks to
explore how to scaffold constructive cognitive and metacognitive
processes in learner-controlled, self-paced computer-based
training environments. Additionally, I am working with Dr.
Stephen Fiore on two research projects: 1) “Integrative
Knowledge Acquisition and Measurement Strategies in Adaptive
Distributed Training Systems,” under the Advanced Distributed
Learning (ADL) initiative; and, 2) “Supporting Knowledge
Acquisition Through Enhanced Displays (SKATED), investigating
the use of interactive training technology to support knowledge
acquisition in the aviation domain.
